Sergio M. Savaresi 
Full Professor 
Sergio M. Savaresi was born in Manerbio, Italy, on September 21st, 1968. He received the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 1992), the Ph.D. in Systems and Control Engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 1996), and the M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics (Catholic University, Brescia, 2000). After the Ph.D. he worked as management consultant at McKinsey&Co, Milan Office. He is Full Professor in Automatic Control, at Politecnico di Milano.
He was visiting researcher at Lund University, Sweden, University of Twente, The Netherlans, Canberra National University, Australia, Stanford University, USA, Minnesota University at Minneapolis, USA, Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria.
He is Associate Editor of the European Journal of Control and IET Transactions on Control Theory and Applications, and Member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE CSS. He is Director of the Milan-Singapore Executive master “ICT and Design for Innovation”.
Sergio Savaresi is the Deputy Director and the Chair of the Systems & Control Section at the Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Bioengineering.
His main interests are in the areas of vehicles control, automotive systems, data analysis and system identification, non-linear control theory, and control applications.
Matteo Corno Associate professor
Matteo Corno jointly received the Master of Science in Computer and Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago and the “Laurea” Degree cum laude from the Politecnico di Milano in 2005. In 2006, he joined the Ph.D. program in Control Engineering at Politecnico di Milano where he graduated in 2009 cum laude. From 2009 to 2011 he was Assistant Professor at the Delft University of Technology. In 2011 he joined the Politecnico di Milano as an Assistant professor. Since 2015, he is an associate professor in the same university.
He held several visiting positions among others at: Johannes Kepler University in Linz, University of Minnesota and Thales Alenia Space.
During his career he won 2 Honda Initiation Grants, the IFAC Congress Interactive Paper Prize at the 19th IFAC World Congress in Cape Town and an award for the best paper published in Control Engineering Practice and the Guglielmo Marconi Prize for Industrial Innovation by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Starting from 2015, he is the Principal Investigator of the Scientific Independence of young Researchers project: Online Accurate Battery State Estimation via Electrochemical Modelling
His research interests include automotive control systems, nonlinear estimation techniques applied to Battery Management Systems and haptic interfaces.
Mara Tanelli Associate professor
Mara Tanelli was born in Lodi, Italy, on 25 September 1978. She received the Master degree in Computer Engineering in 2003 from the Politecnico di Milano and the Master of science in Computer Science in 2003 from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
She earned the Ph.D. in Information Engineering in 2007 (thesis “Active Braking Control Systems Design for Road Vehicles”, supervisor Prof. Sergio M. Savaresi), from the Politecnico di Milano (Milano, Italy).
She was Visiting scholar (June-September 2005) at the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Imperial College, London, UK. Under the supervision of Prof. A. Astolfi. She presently is an Assistant Professor at the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione of the Politecnico di Milano.
Her current research interests include Control of road-vehicles, Control of agricultural-tractors, Markov-Jump Linear Systems and Identification and Control of web-service systems.
Silvia Strada Senior Assistant professor
Silvia Strada was born in Milano, Italy, on 22 November 1965. She received the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1990 and the Ph.D. in Information and Automation Engineering in 1993, both from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. To her M.Sc. thesis (‘’Active Control of vibrations in helicopters’’) was conferred the “Premio Quazza” prize for the best thesis in Control developed at the Politecnico di Milano in that year.
She is currently a Senior Assistant Professor of Automatic Control at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, where her main interests address advanced automatic control methods for linear and non-linear systems, recently focused on sliding mode control strategies for time-varying uncertain systems, data-mining on motor vehicle insurance data to predict crash risk and to profile driver behavior.
She is co-author of peer-reviewed scientific publications and of a workbook to support her teaching activity in Automatic Control.
Simone Formentin Senior Assistant professor
Simone Formentin was born in Legnano, Italy, in 1984. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Automation Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in 2006 and 2008, respectively. In 2012, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Information Technology within a joint program between Politecnico di Milano and Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria.
After that, he held postdoctoral appointments at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland and Università degli studi di Bergamo, Italy. Since 2014, he has been an Assistant Professor at Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of Politecnico di Milano.
His research interests include data-driven optimization and control, mechatronics and automotive applications.
Giulio Panzani Junior Assistant professor
Giulio Panzani was born in Monza, Italy, on 9 January 1984. In April 2008 he received the Master degree cum laude in Mechanical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano discussing a thesis about the control of a power-shift transmission for agricultural tractors (supervised by Prof. Sergio Savaresi).
On April 2008 he also joined MOVE@DEI as a research assistant. His main interests are about the control of semi-active damper and control of motorbike dynamic.
Valentina Breschi Senior post-Doc Research Assistant
Valentina Breschi was born in Florence, Italy, 
on January 25th, 1990. She received the B.Sc. degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering and the M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Automation Engineering (curriculum Automation engineering) from the University of Florence, Italy, in 2011 and 2014, respectively. In 2018, she obtained her Ph.D. degree in Institution, Markets and Technologies-curriculum Control Systems from IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca.
Tommaso Colombo Senior post-Doc Research Assistant
Tommaso Colombo was born in Monza, Italy, on 9 January 1990. In October 2014 he received the Master of Science cum laude in Control Systems Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. During his master thesis he worked on semi-active control for motorbikes suspension. On November 2014 he joined the Ph.D. program in Control Systems Engineering at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of the Politecnico di Milano. His main interests are about the estimation problems in vehicle dynamics and semi-active suspension control of vertical dynamics.
Alessandro Amodio, PhD Student
Alessandro Amodio was born in Bari (Italy) on February, 23rd 1991. He received his Bachelor’s Degree cum Laude from Politecnico di Bari in 2012 and his Master’s Degree cum Laude from Politecnico di Milano in 2014, discussing a thesis about the design of an anti-rollover control system, to be applied on a narrow-track vehicle. From January to September 2015 he is Visiting Scholar at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio (USA), focusing on the design and testing of fault diagnosis and control algorithms applied to Torque Security problems on electrified vehicles. From November 2015 he is PhD student at Politecnico di Milano, joining the MOVE group.
Luca D’avico, PhD Student
Luca D’Avico was born in Merate, Italy on April 3rd, 1990. In December 2014 he received the Master of Science in Automation Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano discussing a thesis about analysis and development of a cylinders deactivation control system for high powered vehicles (supervised by Prof. Sergio Savaresi).From January 2015 to November 2015 he was a visiting scholar at the Center for Automotive Research (The Ohio State University), working on modeling and estimation of vehicle driveline components for drivability improvement. On November 2015 he joined the Ph.D. program in Systems and Control at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of the Politecnico di Milano
Olga Galluppi, PhD Student
Olga Galluppi was born and raised in Florence. She obtained her Licence 1 in Math at the Université Paris Diderot. After that, she went on to obtain her Bachelor and Master of Science in Automation from the Politecnico di Milano respectively in 2013 and 2015. She is currently a PhD student.
Stefano Marelli, PhD Student
Stefano Marelli was born in Como, Italy, on January 9th, 1988. He received his MSc cum Laude in Control Systems Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2013, with a thesis on a 4-wheeled electric vehicle dynamics modeling and roll over mitigation.
In 2014 he joined Clemson University ICAR, South Carolina (USA), as a Visiting Scholar, working on optimal control of HEVs including battery aging and on aging propagation modeling in interconnected systems. In 2015 he worked with e-Shock s.r.l., Milano (Italy), focusing on the development of a sport car automatic seat, the electronic suspensions lock control for a tilting 4-wheel motorcycle and an integrated inertial measurement unit with GPS module.
In November 2015 he joined MOVE@DEIB as a PhD student. His main research interest is in Li-Ion batteries modeling and states estimation.
Stefano Sabatini, PhD Student
Graduate control engineer with research experience in the automotive field. Experience with model based design in the after-treatment and vehicle dynamics areas. Solid understanding of basic and advanced control systems design. Good knowledge of electrical engineering theory, thermodynamics and mechanics. Advanced knowledge of Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow and experience with the rapid prototyping enviroment ETAS INCA/INTECRIO and dSPACE.
Luca Onesto, PhD Student
Luca Onesto was born in Borgomanero, Italy, on 10th January 1991.
He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree in Control Systems Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2013 and 2015, respectively.
His MSc thesis is related to the development of indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, in collaboration with Maserati – Alfa Romeo group.
On April 2016 he joined the MOVE research group as research fellow.
On November 2016 he joined the Ph.D. program in Systems and Control at DEIB of the Politecnico di Milano.
Simone Gelmini PhD Student
Simone Gelmini was born in Morbegno (SO) – Italy – on May, 28th 1991. He received his Master’s Degree from Politecnico di Milano in 2015, discussing a thesis about the design of the control system for an electric kick scooter. From January to November 2016 he is Visiting Scholar at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR), working on the development of the optimal control of a Three Way Catalytic Converter and its aging diagnostics. From November 2016 he is PhD student at Politecnico di Milano, joining the MOVE group.
Dario Nava PhD Student
Dario Nava was born in Milano, Italy, on 8th December 1991. He received the Bachelor Degree in Automation Engineering in 2013 from Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and the Master Degree cum laude in 2015, discussing a thesis about control of the out-of-plane modes in sport motorcycles. From January 2016 to October 2016 he worked as Research Assistant at Università degli Studi di Bergamo. From November 2016 he joined the Ph.D. program in Control Systems Engineering at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of the Politecnico di Milano.
Gabriele Pozzato PhD Student
Gabriele Pozzato was born in Vicenza, Italy, on October 31st 1991. He received his Bachelor degree in Information Engineering from Università di Padova and his Master of Science (cum laude) in Automation and Control Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, defending a thesis on analysis and development of slip and launch control systems for a high-performance motorcycle.
He was a visiting scholar at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR), South Carolina (USA), from January to November 2016. He worked on the physics based modelling of Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) using finite element simulations and on the derivation of macroscale equations for GPF transport dynamics. He is starting his doctoral research at Politecnico di Milano from November 2016.

Dario Savaresi was born in Brescia, Italy, on April 22nd, 1993. He received the BSc on July 2015 and the Msc on October 2017 in Automation and Control engineering from Politecnico di Milano, discussing a thesis on the gyroscopic stabilization of two-wheeled vehicles. On November 2017 he joined the mOve research group as a PhD student at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria of the Politecnico di Milano.
Stefano Dattilo PhD Student
Stefano Dattilo was born in Codogno (LO), Italy, on January 29th 1993. He received the Bachelor Degree on September 2015 and the Master of Science cum laude on October 2017, both in Automation and Control Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Italy). His Master’s thesis concerned the analysis and development of a gyroscopic stabilizing system for two wheel vehicles. Starting from November 2017 he is a PhD candidate in System and Control at Politecnico di Milano and member of the mOve group.
Alessandra Duz PhD Student
Alessandra Duz was born in Cremona, (Italy) on May 19th, 1992. She received the bachelor’s degree in Ingegneria dell’Automazione and the master’s degree cum laude in Automation and Control Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, discussing a thesis on tractor’s suspensions. After the graduation she was visiting scholar in University of California Riverside, CA from January to October 2017. She is currently a PhD student.
Gianluca Savaia PhD Student
Gianluca Savaia was born in Genova, Italy, in 1992. He received a BSc degree cum laude in Computer Engineering from Università degli Studi di Genova in 2014, and a MSc in Automation and Control Engineering with honors at Politecnico di Milano in 2016. In Milano, he was a student of Alta Scuola Politecnica, which earned him a double degree in Mechatronics from Politecnico di Torino, and participated to the Erasmus+ programme, spending 6 months in TU Delft.
After his graduation, he worked as a Research Scholar at Clemson University in the International Center for Automotive Research (ICAR) in the United States. He was an active member of the Deep Orange 8 project, where he contributed to the vehicle’s self-driving software.
Since November 2017, he is a Ph.D. student in Systems and Control Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.
Davide Todeschini PhD Student
Davide was born in Lecco (Italy) on January, 29th 1993. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Politecnico di Milano in 2015 and his Master’s Degree cum Laude from Politecnico di Milano in 2017, discussing a thesis about the analysis and design of an electromechanical suspension for mountain bikes. From November 2017 he is PhD student at Politecnico di Milano, joining the MOVE group.
Francesco Abbracciavento Junior Research Assistant
Francesco Abbracciavento was born in Grottaglie (TA), Italy, on August 26th, 1993. He received his B.Sc. Degree and M.Sc. Degree cum laude in “Automation and Control Engineering” from Politecnico di Milano, respectively in July 2015 and in December 2017.
His M.Sc. thesis is related to environment sensing and obstacle avoidance for a two-wheeled autonomous terrestrial drone.
Starting from April 2018, he joined the MOVE group as Research Assistant.
